Veronica Santiago, 26, was crossing a North Philadelphia street last night, when she was fatally struck by a pickup truck that never stopped, according to police.

Santiago, who lived in the 1600 block of Mount Vernon Street, at the eastern edge of the city's Spring Garden section, was crossing the intersection at Fifth and York Streets about 8:40 p.m., when the accident occurred, police said.

The truck, which was headed north on Fifth Street, is described as a tan or white mid-sized pickup, which had a dented passenger-side door, possibly from a previous accident.

The driver left Santiago lying there with severe head trauma and broken bones, police said.

She was taken to Temple University Medical Center, where was pronounced dead shortly after midnight.

The pickup was last seen heading east from Fifth Street on Cumberland Street.
