Hit-run victims identified by police

The toddler and his 20-year-old mother who were victims of a hit-and-run this weekend were identified Sunday.

The toddler and his 20-year-old mother who were victims of a hit-and-run this weekend were identified Sunday.

At about 8:20 p.m. Saturday, Deone Leone and two-year-old Derek Martinez were crossing the intersection at Sixth Street and Washington Avenue in South Philadelphia when a silver Mercedes-Benz struck the pair.

The toddler was taken to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where he was pronounced dead at 9:04 p.m. as a result of his injuries.

Deone Leone was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania with traumatic leg and body injuries. She was in stable condition as of Sunday evening, police said.

Police were still looking for the Mercedes-Benz that fled the scene. The vehicle was described as having chrome wheels and tinted windows. The car disappeared down Sixth Street.

Deone Leone and Derek Martinez are from the 500 block of Washington Avenue, police said.    - Claudia Vargas
