Crews work to clear freight derailment in Center City

Railroad crews worked this morning to put five cars of a freight train back on track after they derailed last night on the east bank of the Schuylkill River in Center City.

Railroad crews worked this morning to put five cars of a freight train back on track after they derailed last night on the east bank of the Schuylkill River in Center City.

Their efforts suffered a setback about 5:30 a.m. when a hopper car toppled over as cranes tried to lift it back on the tracks. No one was injured and the train was righted in about an hour.

The five cars in the middle of a 123-car CSX freight train jumped the tracks about 10:30 last night near where Race Street meets the Schulykill River Trail.

No one was injured in the derailment and none of the cars was carrying a toxic or hazardous cargo, officials said.

Investigators are trying to determine the cause of the derailment.

The train was en route from Albany, N.Y., to North Carolina.
