Train hits car at South Jersey crossing

A woman escaped serious injury this morning when her car was broadsided by a slow-moving train at a crossing near the entrance to the Bellmawr Industrial Park.

A woman escaped serious injury this morning when her car was broadsided by a slow-moving train at a crossing near the entrance to the Bellmawr Industrial Park.

Kathryn Brancato, 49, of Bellmawr, was treated and released for minor injuries at Cooper Hospital in Camden following the 3:25 a.m. accident on Browning Road.

Bellmawr Police Chief William Walsh said the woman told police that she failed to see or hear the approaching train.

A Conrail spokesman John Enright said that the train was probably going about 5 mph because it was about to enter a curve leading into the industrial park.

There is no gate or flashing signals at the crossing.

According to Walsh, no charges have been filed pending an investigation by both his department and Conrail.

"There are rarely trains at that location," Walsh said, adding motorists often drive through not expecting to see one.
