2 men critical after shooting in Hunting Park

Two men riding in a car were critically wounded in an ambush shooting late Thursday afternoon in the city's Hunting Park section, police said.

About 4:50 p.m., a Hyundai was stopped at Ninth and Butler Streets when someone opened fire, striking the passenger side of the car 12 times, said Chief Inspector Scott Small.

The car sped off about 50 feet and crash into a building. The 24-year-old driver was shot twice in his right torso. He was taken by police to Temple University Hospital and was listed in very critical condition.

The 23-year-old passenger was shot in the torso, back, and right leg. He also was taken to Temple by police and was reported in critical condition.

A nearby surveillance camera recorded video of a silver Honda Accord speeding away from the scene after the shooting, Small said. Police recovered 16 spent shell casings at the intersection.
