Woman questioned in roommate's slaying

Homicide detectives are questioning a West Philadelphia woman in connection with the death of her 62-year-old roommate who was found bludgeoned early Thursday morning in their home, police said.

Capt. James Clark, commander of the homicide unit, said Saundra Barley was found to have suffered blunt force trauma when police were called to her home on the unit block of 53rd Street at 2:53 a.m.

The roommate, a 57-year-old woman, told police that three unknown men had broken into the home and killed Barley, police said.

Clark said detectives "don't believe it happened that way" and took the roommate in for questioning, he said. She was being interviewed Thursday morning.

Clark said the roommates had a history of "fighting and arguing" though he did not know what those arguments were about. He said the two had lived together for some time.
