Woman killed, man critical after crash outside Northeast High School

A woman was ejected from her car and killed this morning in a violent Northeast Philadelphia crash that also left a man in critical condition.

Philadelphia police said the 21-year-old woman was driving her 2001 Toyota Corolla north on Algon Avenue when she crashed into a 2014 Nissan Altima at the road's intersection with Cottman Avenue.

The woman, whose name was not immediately released, was ejected through the driver-side window of her car. Officers responding to the 4:11 a.m. crash found her face-down under a vehicle.

She was taken to Aria Health's Torresdale Campus, where she died at 6:37 a.m., police said.

The Altima's driver, a 66-year-old man, was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The violent crash propelled the Altima, which had been traveling east on Cottman, through a fence at Northeast High School before the vehicle came to a stop.

Police said detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the crash.
