Russian lawmaker tweets of 'American exceptionalism' role in D.C. shooting

A Russian lawmaker took to Twitter hours after a shooting in Washington D.C. left at 12 dead to describe "American exceptionalism" as smelling of "political racism" — and that was the translated version.

Alexey Pushkov, who heads the foriegn relations committee of Russia's lower house of Parliament called Doma, tweeted just minutes after the shooting at the Navy Yard in Washington in the Russian Cyrillic alphabet. He then tweeted a bit of an explanation in the English alphabet.

He was quickly attacked by fellow tweeters, who took umbrage with his use of another American mass shooting to fire a shot across the bow of ongoing Russian-American geopolitical tensions. But Puskov didn't disappear from Twitter despite the backlash. About a half hour later at 10:45 a.m. (EST), he tweeted again in Cyrillic what Google translator gave a rough conversion into English as:

For the U.S. proposal to abandon the concept of exclusivity Amer. "democratically"-thinking Americans are showered me with insults. Esteem.

Here's the original tweet:

За предложение США отказаться от концепции исключительностью амер. "демократически" мыслящие амер-цы осыпали меня ругательствами. Почитайте.

At 2:29 p.m., he took a bigger picture look when he tweeted this:

В США идет "новая волна": очень сильны настроения против войны, недоверие к тем, кто за нее выступает. Такого поворота Обама явно не ожидал.

The Google translation:

In the USA there is a "new wave": a very strong sentiments against the war, distrust of those who are for it stands for. This turn of Obama did not expect.

He did not tweet his source for that information.
