Police ID cop, suspect shot in Tacony

Authorities have identified the man killed in an overnight shootout with police that left one officer injured.

Philadelphia police said this afternoon that 29-year-old David Ellis was killed after he opened fire on officers who responded to a report of an armed man in Tacony.

The wounded officer, identified as 14-year veteran Stephen Korpalski, was grazed in the head by a bullet. He has been released from Albert Einstein Medical Center and is recovering at home, officials said.

The altercation began when Korpalski and his partner were called to a report of a man with a gun on the 6400 block of Ditman Street just before 12:45 a.m.

The uniformed officers encountered the suspect at Magee and Torresdale avenues, and tried to stop him, police said.

The suspect fired at the officers, striking Korpalski, who is assigned to the 15th District.

Korpalski and three other officers returned fire. Ellis was hit multiple times and pronounced dead at Aria-Torresdale Hospital at 1:35 a.m.

His gun, a .32-caliber revolver, was recovered from the shooting scene, police said.

Korpalski was taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center for treatment of a graze wound to the left side of his head, Commissioner Charles Ramsey said. He was described as alert and talking shortly after arriving at the hospital.

Ramsey called the officer, who he said is married and has a three-week-old child, "very fortunate."

If the bullet had struck him "about a half inch over, a bit more, and we'd be planning a funeral right now," Ramsey said.

The incident remains under investigation.
