A South Jersey police chief was shot in the leg this afternoon with his own gun as he visited an office in the Bordentown Township municipal building.
Chief Frank Nucera, who also serves as a Bordentown Twp. administrator, was visiting the tax collector’s office about 3:45 p.m. when his department issued firearm discharged. At the time of the discharge, a juvenile was in the office with his parents who were conducting business, said Joel Bewley, spokesman for the Burlington County Prosecutor’s office.
Exactly how the gun went off is under investigation, Bewley said, adding the juvenile may have been responsible for the discharge.
“Our office is looking into the circumstances surrounding that,” Bewley said.
Nucera was taken to an area hospital where he was being treated for a non-life threatening gunshot wound.
“There’s no reason for public alarm,” Bewley said.
