Immigrant gets 51 months in ID theft, gun possession

A Mexican man living unlawfully in the United States was sentenced today to 51 months in federal prison for identity theft, making a false statement and possession of a firearm.

Juan Pedro Guzman-Zavala, 28, of Reading, assumed the identity of a U.S. citizen to apply for a U.S. passport. In addition, Guzman-Zavala possessed a 9mm handgun "despite the prohibition against illegal aliens possessing firearms," a spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's office said.

Guzman-Zavala, also known as Alvaro Julio Luna,  will also be required to pay a $2,000 fine and a $300 assessment, said the spokeswoman.
