Girl, 9, killed crossing street in Montco

A 9-year-old Willow Grove girl died after she was hit by a car while trying to cross a road in Montgomery County.

Abington Township police said the accident happened just before 9 p.m. Wednesday, when the girl and a guardian were crossing Rockwell Road near Old Welsh Road.

The caretaker crossed the street, but the child was struck by a vehicle traveling north when she stepped out from between two parked cars, police said.

The striking vehicle, driven by an 18-year-old girl whom police did not identify, didn't immediately stop. She drove to a nearby grocery store parking lot and called her mother, who drove to the crash scene and alerted officers that her daughter had been involved.

The girl was taken to Abington Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Police have not released her name.

Officials said the investigation into the accident is continuing.
