Crash shuts down Route 202 in Delaware

Police are investigating a crash that shut down U.S. Route 202 in Wilmington early Saturday.

Police are investigating a crash that shut down U.S. Route 202 in Wilmington early Saturday.

It happened shortly after 12:15 a.m. in the northbound lanes of the highway north of Silverside Road, Delaware State Police said in a news release.

A 1997 Toyota Camry struck an electrical pole in the center grass median between a Saladworks and an Ashley Furniture store, police said.

The impact split the pole, causing three more poles to break on the north and southbound lanes of the highway, according to investigators.

Two vehicles traveling behind the Camry then struck the low-hanging wires, police said.

No injuries were reported, but all lanes of Route 202 in the area of the crash were shut down.

The driver of the Camry, 30-year-old Matthew Pierce, of Coopersburg, Pa., was cited for failing to remain within a single lane and having no proof of insurance, police said.

The roadway was expected to remain closed until 4 p.m. Saturday as the electrical poles were replaced.
