Cops: Notre Dame fan knocks man out

One Notre Dame fan took the team's nickname - the "Fighting Irish" - way too far last night when he punched a man unconcious after almost hitting him with his truck in South Philadelphia, according to police.

NOTRE DAMN, this was not cool.

One Notre Dame fan took the team's nickname - the "Fighting Irish" - too far Saturday night when he punched a man unconscious after almost hitting him with his truck in South Philadelphia, according to police.

About 8:10 p.m., cops responded to reports of a person screaming in a parking lot at Lincoln Financial Field. There, they found the victim, a 33-year-old man, and four witnesses who told authorities that the victim had almost been struck by a motorist in a white Ford pickup truck.

When the victim confronted the driver about the close call, the motorist - who was wearing a white, long-sleeved Notre Dame shirt - got out of his truck and punched the victim in his forehead, knocking him out, police said.

The aggressor, who was about 30 years old and 5-10 with a muscular build, fled the scene in his F-250 Ford Super Duty truck, which had Delaware plates, according to police.

The assault happened just 10 minutes after the start of the Temple vs. Notre Dame game at the Linc.

Anyone with information on the motorist's identity is asked to call the Police Department's tip line at 215-686-8477.
