Construction starting on Betsy Ross Bridge, Aramingo Ave. ramp project

Construction work is about to begin to build and rebuild ramps at the interchange for Interstate 95, the Betsy Ross Bridge, and Aramingo Avenue in Northeast Philadelphia.

PennDot said construction is scheduled to start Monday on the $160.2 million project. Work at the site is expected to continue through fall 2017.

Most existing ramps at the interchange are slated to be rebuilt, and new ramps will create a direct link between the Betsy Ross Bridge and Aramingo Avenue.

The work means several lane closures and restrictions will be in effect next week:

- Tuesday through Friday, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.: There will be lane closures on I-95 North between the Betsy Ross/Aramingo Avenue interchange (exit 26) and Bridge Street (exit 27) as crews shift northbound lanes and install concrete barriers.

- 9 p.m. Monday through 5 a.m. Tuesday: There will be lane closures on northbound Aramingo Avenue between Wheatsheaf Lane and Church Street so workers can install concrete barriers and paint traffic lines.

- Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.: Traffic shifts will take place on the Aramingo Avenue ramp to I-95, though the ramp will remain open, as concrete barriers are installed.

Additionally, a bicycle detour will be put in place on Aramingo Avenue between Castor Avenue and Orthodox Street on Monday.

Over the next two years, PennDot plans to build new ramps; widen, replace and rehabilitate existing ones; and install new traffic signals, signs and cameras, among other improvements.

The agency said three travel lanes will stay in place in each direction during construction, though overnight lane closures will occur at times.
