Route 202 reopens after crash, woman seriously hurt

A woman was seriously hurt in a crash on Route 202 in Upper Merion Township this morning that snarled traffic for hours during the morning rush.

Pennsylvania State Police said the crash happened when a tractor-trailer partially overturned on the Interstate 76 westbound ramp to Route 202 south shortly after 6:30 a.m.

Some of the trailer's load of scrap metal spilled over the ramp onto the Gulph Road ramp to Route 202 south, police said.

A large piece of metal landed on 46-year-old Janice Storms' 2004 Toyota Corolla, trapping the Lansdale woman inside the vehicle and seriously injuring her, authorities said.

The tractor-trailer driver, 44-year-old Vernon Smith, of Egg Harbor, suffered minor injuries.

The ramps from I-76 west to Route 202 south and from Gulph Road to Route 202 were both shut down for the investigation, as were southbound lanes on a portion of Route 202.

The road and ramps reopened around 11 a.m.
