Bolaris: Monday morning commute brings another bout of nasty winter weather

A mix of light snow, sleet and freezing rain will impact the region during your morning commute Monday morning.

A mix of light snow, sleet and freezing rain will impact the region during your morning commute Monday morning.

The greatest impact will likely be felt across areas north and west of the Interstate 95 corridor.

For Philadelphia, southern New Jersey, and Delaware, the impact of ice will be minimal, as any mix that began overnight Sunday into Monday should be all rain by 7 a.m.

Freezing rain will create icy roads in Upper Bucks County, central and western Chester County, and northern Montgomery County. Due to the recent deep freeze, ground surfaces will be at or below freezing, so any rain will super cool upon impact with the surface.

Many folks confuse sleet with freezing rain. Sleet is actually those stinging ice pellets that make panging noises as it strikes your house or car. It starts out as snow, but as the ice crystals fall through warming layers in the atmosphere, it starts to melt — just not enough but it reaches the ground.

Freezing rain is "regular" rain that falls onto the freezing surfaces, then super cools and becomes a sheet of ice. Throw a glass a water into your freezer and it's basically the same thing.

The aforementioned suburbs should see up to an inch of snow and ice, before the changeover to all rain around noon.

The Lehigh Valley will have a tough time of it. Ice will coat the roadways through the morning commute, along with around an inch of snow and ice.

A cold rain will fall for most during the afternoon hours and there is the chance that the rain could briefly become snow showers as colder air works its way back into the region behind the storm.

Cold air will settle in for Tuesday with dry conditions as temperatures struggle to reach the freezing mark. The rest of the week looks storm free.
