3 more Philadelphia men nabbed in $1.4M jewelry heist

Three men from Philadelphia have been charged in two armed Michigan jewelry-store robberies, including one in which $1.4 million in Rolex watches was reported stolen.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Michigan said 45-year-old David Briley, 35-year-old Shaheed Calhoun and 40-year-old Orlando Johnson have been indicted on charges that include robbery and weapons offenses.

Another Philadelphia man, 42-year-old Nathaniel Pembrook, was indicted for his alleged role in the April heists last month.

In both incidents, the group of men entered the jewelry stores during business hours, brandished firearms and forced workers and customers to the floor, according to prosecutors.

Court documents say the group first smashed cases and opened safes in order to try to steal jewelry from Medawar Jewelers in Grand Rapids.

One of the store's owners shot Pembrook, whose DNA from blood evidence was found at the crime scene, in the right arm and the men fled without obtaining any merchandise, according to court records.

The same four men later forced workers at Tapper's Diamonds and Fine Jewelry in West Bloomfield, Mich., to open a case of Rolex watches.

They made off with about 130 watches, valued at $1.4 million, from the store outside Detroit, court documents said.

The documents say surveillance footage shows the same assailants committing both robberies.

All four were taken into custody in Pennsylvania, officials said. Pembrook is being held in Michigan while awaiting trial, while the other three are awaiting extradition.
