Police: Man fatally shot in Manayunk; woman sexually assaulted in Chestnut Hill

A man was shot dead early Saturday in Philadelphia's Manayunk neighborhood and a woman was sexually assaulted in Chestnut Hill, police said.

A man was shot dead early Saturday in Philadelphia's Manayunk neighborhood and a woman was sexually assaulted in Chestnut Hill, police said.

About 2:40 a.m., officers responded to a residence on the 4300 block of Boone Street for a report of a shooting and found a 32-year-old man bleeding from his back at the bottom of the second-floor stairs, police said. The man, whose name was not released, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said a 29-year-old woman - the man's roommate - was taken to police headquarters for questioning and has been arrested.

No charges had been filed by midafternoon Saturday. Homicide detectives were investigating the possibility that the woman might have shot the man in self-defense.

TV news outlets quoted police as saying the man had entered the woman's bedroom with a pair of scissors, and that the woman then shot him. Police later said they are investigating that possibility; they said the shooting happened during a dispute.

Meanwhile, the police Special Victims Unit is seeking a man who entered a home in Chestnut Hill and sexually assaulted a 56-year-old woman.

Police said that about 4:25 a.m., the woman and a 55-year-old man who also lives in the house on the unit block of East Chestnut Hill Avenue were sleeping when an unknown man entered their bedroom, holding a handgun. The assailant forced the woman to get out of bed, then began to sexually assault her, police said.

At some point, the attacker put his gun down and the woman grabbed it and tried to shoot him, but the gun did not fire, police said. The man in the house then called 911 to report a rape in progress, while the attacker fled the home in the victim's 2017 Hyundai Elantra, police said. The attacker also took other keys, wallets, and a cellphone from the home, police said.

The assailant was described as about 18 to 25 years old, around 5-foot-7 and clean-shaven. He was said to have worn a black hoodie and black pants.

Separately, police said that about 11:45 p.m. Friday, a 51-year-old man was stabbed in the stomach while outside on 10th Street, near Fairmount Avenue, in North Philadelphia.

The victim was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital, where he was taken into surgery and listed in stable condition.

This attacker, who also has not been arrested, was described as about 35 to 40 years old, 5-foot-9 and 170 pounds, with a mustache and of medium build. He was wearing a two-toned black North Face jacket, blue jeans, and brown boots.
