Born to fly: inflight birth diverts plane from Philly

A mid-air birth caused a plane from Philadelphia to make an unscheduled landing Sunday night. A nurse on board Southwest Airlines flight 556 assisted the mother, who gave birth while the plane inflight to Orlando, Fla., according to the a spokeswoman for the airline. The flight, which left Philadelphia at 2:46 p.m., was diverted to Charleston, S.C., where medics took the parents and the baby to an area hospital, the spokeswoman said.

The flight, which left Philadelphia at 2:46 p.m., was diverted to Charleston, S.C., where medics took the parents and the baby to an area hospital, the spokeswoman said.

The flight then continued on to Orlando, arriving with 132 passengers about an hour behind schedule.
