Man, 51, killed in Rhawnhurst hit and run

A pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run crash in Rhawnhurst early Sunday morning and the driver remains unaccounted for, according to police.

A pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run crash in Rhawnhurst early Sunday morning and the driver remains unaccounted for, according to police.

The 51-year-old pedestrian, whose identity has not been released pending family notification, was crossing Castor Avenue near Bleigh around 1:36 a.m. when he was hit by a motorist in a 2000 white Chevy Impala who was traveling north on Castor Avenue, police said.

The driver fled the scene and abandoned the Impala about two blocks away at Shelmire Avenue and Horrocks Street, police said. That motorist has yet to be identified or apprehended.

The victim was taken to Aria Health's Torresdale Hospital with severe head and chest trauma and was pronounced dead at 4:07 a.m., according to police.
