Philadelphia police have identified the man they say caused a two-hour standoff with police in West Philadelphia on Friday in which he shot and wounded his sister during a domestic dispute and fired a gun at officers.

The 24-year-old man, Kadeem Nelson, was shot several times by police and taken by medics to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center for treatment.

Two other adults and four children were inside the home at the time, police said. They were not injured.

A police spokesman Saturday did not have any information on whether Nelson was to face charges or the extent of his injuries.

A Penn Medicine spokeswoman said Saturday afternoon that Nelson was in serious condition.

It was about 4:20 p.m. Friday when officers responded to a report of a person screaming at the home on the 200 block of South Millick Street.

Upon their arrival, police were let into the home by Nelson's 28-year-old sister, who opened the door and told police Nelson had assaulted her mother, police said.

At the same time, police said, Nelson came out from the kitchen and began firing a .380-caliber pistol at the officers.

One bullet struck Nelson's sister in the right forearm, police said. The sister, who then fled the house, was taken by police to Penn Presbyterian.

After Nelson began firing at them again, officers retreated, taking cover behind a parked vehicle, police said. Nelson stood at the entrance of the house, firing his gun at the officers, police said.

That's when officers returned fire, striking Nelson multiple times, police said.

Nelson then went back into the house and barricaded himself inside.

A police SWAT unit was called in. After making contact with another person inside the house, the team was able to get inside about 6:25 p.m. Nelson was then taken into custody without further incident, police said.

A Davis Industries .380-caliber semiautomatic pistol was recovered from inside the home. It had one bullet inside, police said.
