A police officer fired a shot at a stolen SUV that nearly ran him down Thursday night in the city's Kensington section, police said.

The driver of the Jeep Grand Cherokee, a woman in her 30s, was apprehended later after crashing the SUV into a police van in Port Richmond, said police spokesman Lt. John Stanford.

The woman suffered a hand injury, but it was not immediately clear whether it was a bullet wound or an injury sustained in the crash, Stanford said.

Shortly before 9:30 p.m., a marked police vehicle was heading east on Clearfield Street at E Street when police saw the SUV approaching on Clearfield driving the wrong way on the one-way street.

An officer got out of the police vehicle and was on the sidewalk when the SUV approached and nearly struck him, Stanford said. The officer fired one shot, striking the SUV.

Police broadcast a description of the Grand Cherokee, and other police located it and began following it before the SUV crashed on Richmond Street near Ann Street.

The woman was taken to Temple University Hospital.

The officer who fired the shot will be assigned to administrative duty while Internal Affairs conducts a mandatory investigation of the police gun discharge.
