A 29-year-old man standing with his son was fatally shot Wednesday night outside a community center in the Mantua section of West Philadelphia, police said.

Shortly before 8:30 p.m., the victim, whose name was not released, was exchanging words with another man outside the entrance to the Mantua Haverford Community Center in the 600 block of North 39th Street when the other man opened fire, said Chief Inspector Scott Small.

The victim, who was shot three times, was taken by medics to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 8:56 p.m. His son was not injured.

Surveillance cameras at the center recorded the shooting, Small said. The shooter was wearing dark clothing and fled the scene. The victim lived about a half-block away. - Robert Moran
