A 13-year-old boy playing with a handgun injured himself and a 12-year-old girl when it accidentally fired Monday night in a South Philadelphia house, police said.

Police were called about 8:40 p.m. to the 2100 block of Etting Place, where they found the girl shot in her right knee, said Chief Inspector Scott Small. She was taken by medics to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where she was listed in stable condition.

Police learned that the boy was taken by private automobile to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where he was reported in stable condition. The vehicle was being held at the hospital for evidence.

The boy was playing with the silver handgun with the girl in a second-floor bedroom when it went off, Small said. The boy went downstairs with the gun and out the back of the residence into the alley. Police searched the alley for the gun but could not find it.

"We're questioning everybody," Small said.
