A woman was killed and multiple people were hurt by a hit-and-run driver Friday night in South Philadelphia, police said.

About 8:30 p.m., a Toyota minivan traveling on 21st Street near Jackson struck  a 1997 Toyota Avalon, which then struck three pedestrians on the street corner, police said.

The Avalon hit a family of three, including a woman and her 2-year-old son, TV news outlets reported.

The mother was pronounced dead shortly afterward at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, police said. The man she was with and the toddler were taken to Jefferson University Hospital with minor injuries, police said.

Four people in the minivan - the male driver and three minor female passengers - were also injured.

The Toyota Avalon continued for another block before the driver jumped out and fled from the scene. He was taken into custody and was expected to face charges.
