A 16-year-old boy was fatally shot overnight in South Philadelphia, police said.

The teen, identified by police as Asir Brown, was shot about 11:59 p.m. Sunday on the 1800 block of South 31st Street, and was pronounced dead at 12:37 a.m. Monday at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

TV news outlets reported that the teen was among a dozen people attending a holiday weekend barbecue when shots were fired from a passing car. They said the boy was not believed to be the intended target.

Police, who responded to a report of a person with a gun, arrived at the scene and found Brown in the rear of a property on that block, shot once in the back. They performed CPR on him until medics arrived and took the boy to CHOP.

Six small-caliber fired cartridge casings were found in the rear driveway.

Police said that a dark-colored vehicle last seen heading north from the scene may have been the shooter's vehicle.
