A 23-year-old East Mount Airy man was convicted Thursday of third-degree murder, homicide by vehicle and related offenses for a September 2014 crash that killed a 73-year-old man who was driving his grandson home from football practice.

About 8:15 p.m. Sept. 26, 2014, Dion Hunter blew through a stop sign on Gorgas Lane near Ardleigh Street in East Mount Airy. His SUV hit a car driven by David Wilson, of Morris Street in Germantown.

Medics pronounced Wilson dead at the scene. His 13-year-old grandson suffered minor injuries.

Hunter and his male passenger initially fled the scene, but were taken into custody minutes later by responding officers. The passenger was not charged.

They were driving back from a bar that night.

Hunter, who at the time lived with his parents on the 1300 block of Yerkes Street, several blocks from the accident scene, has been in custody since his arrest.

His nonjury trial before Philadelphia Common Pleas Judge Sandy Byrd began Monday. Hunter was also convicted of leaving the scene of an accident, driving under the influence of alcohol, and related offenses. Byrd set an Aug. 5 sentencing date.

Hunter's lawyer, Sterling Rauf, said Thursday, "It's a tragedy all around."
