Attorney says Dunkin' Donuts rant preceded by racial slur

A 22-year-old Point Breeze woman has been arrested and charged with simple assault in an unruly disturbance at a Dunkin' Donuts in Southwest Center City that left the store manager injured, authorities said Friday.

A 22-year-old Point Breeze woman has been arrested and charged with simple assault in an unruly disturbance at a Dunkin' Donuts in Southwest Center City that left the store manager injured, authorities said Friday.

Safaa Brown, of the 1500 block of Ellsworth Street, is accused of entering the Dunkin' Donuts, at 1551 Washington Ave., about 6:50 a.m. Feb. 12 and going on a tantrum.

According to police, Brown had placed an order and was dissatisfied with the service she received. She began knocking things off the counter, picked up a ceramic cup and threw it at the store manager, police said.

Brown fled and was last seen entering a dark-colored vehicle, police said.

The store manager, a 31-year-old woman, was taken to Pennsylvania Hospital, where she was treated for a cut on her left wrist.

Brown's attorney, Donald Moser, said there's more to what happened.

He said his client "saw red" and had a "knee-jerk reaction" after being called a racial slur by the store manager.

Moser said Brown dances at a strip club, and was trying to pay for her order with crumpled-up bills.

As she was trying to arrange them, Moser said, the cashier told her to hurry up and used obscenities.

When Brown asked for the manager, Moser said, the manager also used obscenities and called Brown a racial slur.

Brown faces misdemeanor charges of simple assault, possession of an instrument of crime and related offenses. She is scheduled for a May 20 hearing in Philadelphia Municipal Court.

The store manager could not be reached for comment.
