More snow, freezing temps in store for Philly this weekend?

Yet more winterlike weather could be headed to Philadelphia this weekend.

Forecasters say there's a chance of snow in the region Saturday, with overnight temperatures likely to dip near freezing.

The National Weather Service says the precipitation is expected to start Friday night into early Saturday, with a chance of showers throughout the day Saturday.

In Philadelphia, the precipitation could start as snow and turn to rain by midmorning Saturday as the temperature rises. There's also a slight chance of snow Saturday night. Little or no snow is expected to accumulate in the city.

But in places further north, near Allentown or the Poconos, some snow could stick.

"Generally we expect around an inch or less, mainly on grassy surfaces," a weather service forecast discussion said.

Adding to the winterlike feel, temperatures are expected to drop to near or below freezing both Friday night into Saturday and Saturday into Sunday.

To protect crops from frost damage, New Jersey officials are continuing to allow farmers to conduct controlled open burning or use special torches called smudge pots. Farmers who believe they will need to use the techniques should call the state Department of Environmental Protection's communication center at 877-927-6337 (WARNDEP).

The potential snow and cold snap come after flurries were reported in the Philadelphia area Tuesday, amid several days of chilly weather.

In Atlantic City, the temperature dipped to 22 degrees on Wednesday, setting a record low for the date, according to the weather service.

For Thursday, however, warmer but windy weather is on tap for the Philadelphia area.

Forecasters say to expect a high temperature near 60 degrees, showers and a potential thunderstorm. A wind advisory is in place for much of South Jersey until 6 p.m.
