A man was fatally shot overnight in Philadelphia, following a day that saw an unusually high number of violent crimes across the city.

The deadly shooting occurred shortly before 1:45 a.m. Thursday on the 100 block of East Indiana Avenue, on the border of the city's Fairhill and Kensington sections.

A man in his 40s was found suffering from several gunshot wounds to his upper torso and abdomen, police said.

He was taken to Temple University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:59 a.m.

The shooting victim hadn't been identified as of Thursday morning.

No arrests were made and police had no descriptions of any suspects.

The slaying, the 61st homicide in Philadelphia of 2016, came after two people were shot to death in an East Frankford home Wednesday afternoon and three more shootings and one stabbing occurred over a one-hour span early Wednesday evening.

As of Wednesday night, Philadelphia had seen more homicides for the year to date than any year since 2012, when 79 people had been killed by March 23, according to police data. At this point last year, 54 homicides had been reported.
