Wolf endorses Montco chair Shapiro for Pa. AG

Gov. Wolf, who has called for state Attorney General Kathleen G. Kane to resign, made clear on Sunday whom he would like to see next hold that post.

Gov. Wolf, who has called for state Attorney General Kathleen G. Kane to resign, made clear on Sunday whom he would like to see next hold that post.

Wolf endorsed Montgomery County Commission Chairman Josh Shapiro for the April 26 Democratic primary election, saying he is "a proven reformer who will restore integrity to Harrisburg, and he is the best choice to be our next attorney general."

Kane is awaiting trial in Montgomery County on perjury and other charges, accused of leaking secret grand-jury materials to the Philadelphia Daily News. She announced on Tuesday that she will not seek a second term.

Wolf, in a statement emailed to his and Shapiro's political supporters, praised Shapiro's record of standing up for "marriage equality" and opposing "attempts to implement a voter ID law" in the state.

Shapiro, who was sworn in last month to a second term on the county commission, faces Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala Jr. and Northampton County District Attorney John Morganelli in the primary.

Wolf's endorsement was expected. He appointed Shapiro in April as chairman of the state Commission on Crime and Delinquency.

The Pennsylvania Republican Party has endorsed state Sen. John Rafferty of Eagleville for the post of attorney general.

Rafferty is being challenged in the Republican primary by Joe Peters, a former state and federal prosecutor who worked briefly as a spokesman for Kane.
