Last 90-degree day in Philly - for now, at least

Thursday should be the final day of Philadelphia's latest heat wave - but it probably won't be the last time the region sees temperatures above 90 degrees this summer.

Thursday should be the final day of Philadelphia's latest heat wave - but it probably won't be the last time the region sees temperatures above 90 degrees this summer.

Forecasters are calling for a high near 93 in Philadelphia Thursday, which would mark the fifth consecutive day the mercury has soared above 90.

A break in the heat is expected to kick in for Labor Day weekend, starting Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

The weather service says to expect highs of around 87 degrees on Friday, 83 on Saturday, 87 on Sunday and 89 on Monday.

But come Tuesday and Wednesday, the mercury should be back to 90, the weather service said.

Usually, Philadelphia sees just one or two 90-degree days in September.

The record for the most 90-plus days in September stands at eight, which happened in 1931, 1941 and 1970.

The city recorded 12 90-degree days in August, twice as many as normal.

The current heat wave is Philadelphia's fifth of the summer. The longest stretch of 90-plus days was the eight-day string of July 28 through Aug. 4.
