A former bookkeeper at a Delaware County welding company has been charged with stealing almost $700,000 from his employer over 13 years, the District Attorney's office said Thursday.

A former bookkeeper at a Delaware County welding company has been charged with stealing almost $700,000 from his employer over 13 years, the District Attorney's office said Thursday.

Jeffrey McElwee, 53, of Essington, was arrested last week and charged with theft, receiving stolen property, forgery, and related crimes. He was remanded to the Delaware County jail after failing to post bail.

According to court records, the owner and accountant of Power Source Welding, in Collingdale, contacted police when they discovered McElwee, an employee since 2002, had been stealing funds using the owner's line of credit.

Investigators found McElwee had written 399 unauthorized checks to himself totaling more than $574,000 and made 257 withdrawals totaling more than $122,000 from ATMs.

Over 130 of the transactions were made at a Wawa near where McElwee lived. The company owner, John Jenzano, was not aware McElwee had an ATM card on the account, according to court documents.
