Traffic flow expected to improve on 202

CONCORD TWP. Starting in the fall, residents of Concord and Chadds Ford Townships can expect better traffic flow at nine intersections along Route 202, thanks to a grant obtained by Concord.

The $432,000 project, which will begin this month, is to install video detection cameras at the intersections in an attempt to alleviate delays along the heavily traveled route.

By monitoring traffic patterns and flow in real time, the video detection cameras will help determine which intersections should receive a green light and for how long. The system will also allow the traffic lights to communicate with one another to allow drivers to pass through multiple, consecutive green lights at a time.

The project, to be completed by the end of September, will build upon a similar system installed by the township along Baltimore Pike from Route 202 to Route 322.

The system will replace an outdated traffic plan used by the corridor, which used predetermined timing patterns to trigger green lights at intersections.
