Free meals for Chester youngsters

CHESTER With the public school year over, students who receive free and reduced-price lunches may not have access to nutritious meals during the summer.

CHESTER With the public school year over, students who receive free and reduced-price lunches may not have access to nutritious meals during the summer.

The Chester Housing Authority is working to fill the gap.

Launching its free summer food program for the second year, the authority is set to serve two meals a day to Chester children. The program will begin Monday and is to run through Aug. 28.

Last year, the authority served 5,700 meals to children throughout the summer, it said. This year, the program has an added component that will give students access to computer labs between meals. The housing authority is also to host workshops about healthy eating for children and adults.

The program is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Breakfast will be served daily from 8:45 to 9:45 a.m. and lunch from noon to 1:30 p.m. at three locations: the William Penn Homes Community Learning Center, 514 Union St., the Ruth L. Bennett Homes Community Learning Center, 1350 W. 9th St., and the Booker T. Washington Community Learning Center, 611 Central Ave.
