Police were investigating the death of a newborn baby found inside a duffel bag Friday evening at a West Philadelphia home.

Police were investigating the death of a newborn baby found inside a duffel bag Friday evening at a West Philadelphia home.

The baby, possibly born Thursday, was found unresponsive in the bag in the 5800 block of Norfolk Street and was transported by private vehicle to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. The baby was pronounced dead at the hospital at 5:59 p.m., police said.

The mother was transported by private vehicle to the same hospital and was admitted for unspecified care. The case was being investigated by the Special Victims Unit. No further details were immediately available. - Robert Moran
