A Philadelphia police officer shot and wounded a man carrying two guns in Frankford late Thursday, police said.

Two 15th District officers were traveling in a squad car on the 1600 block of Pratt Street, surveying the area after a report of a shooting several blocks away on Akron Street.

A statement released by the Police Department said that the officers saw "what appeared to be a dispute involving a crowd" gathered on Pratt Street, and that one got out of the car to walk toward the group.

He saw a man bicycle away from the group, westbound on Pratt, according to the statement, and the other officer followed him in the patrol car.

Then, the man dropped his bicycle and fled in the opposite direction, back toward the first officer, police said.

Police said the man was carrying a black Glock handgun with an extended magazine, and pointed it at the first officer, who fired one shot, striking him in his thigh.

The man fell to the ground, where he was handcuffed. Police found a second handgun, a Taurus, in his pants pocket.

An initial report on the shooting said that an officer had chased the man down Pratt and that the man had been shot after he refused an order to drop his gun. Police said that information had been preliminary.

Police did not name the man who was shot. He was treated at Einstein Medical Center and released into police custody, they said.
