Man, 24, wounded in police-involved shooting in Nicetown

A 24-year-old man with two handguns was shot by police after allegedly aiming one of the weapons at an officer during a foot pursuit Tuesday night in the city's Nicetown section, police said.

Around 7:20 p.m., police were called to 17th and Cayuga Streets and found a wounded 23-year-old man collapsed next to a minivan that had 15 bullet holes, Chief Inspector Scott Small said. Numerous shell casings were found about 20 feet away.

As police arrived, the 24-year-old man exited the rear of the minivan and tried to leave the scene, Small said.

Police saw he was carrying a handgun with an extended clip and began pursing the man north on 17th, Small said.

As the man turned west on Blavis Street, police ordered him to stop and drop his weapon, Small said. The man aimed the gun at police and an officer fired.

Police took the man to Temple University Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition with gunshot wounds to his groin, torso, and left shoulder.

Small said it was not immediately clear whether the man suffered any of the three wounds when he was inside the minivan.

The 23-year-old shooting victim also was taken to Temple and was reported in stable condition. No officers were injured.

On Monday, the U.S. Justice Department issued a report on police shootings in Philadelphia, recommending wholesale changes in procedures and training.
