Temperatures dropping as snow falls and the wind whips

Temperatures dropped Sunday night and the wind chill was expected to dip below zero by morning, as biting cold, strong winds, and even a sprinkling of snow appeared poised to envelop the region for at least 24 hours.

Meteorologist Mike Gorse, of the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, N.J., said temperatures Sunday would likely be in the teens, but wind gusts exceeding 50 miles per hour would make it feel more like 10 to 15 degrees below zero.

Most areas around Philadelphia would also pick up between 1 and 3 inches of snow, Gorse said. A fast-moving snow squall on Saturday night had already dumped fresh powder on parts of the suburbs and South Jersey, he added.

The wind chill values could remain below zero until Monday, Gorse said, when the strong gusts were expected to subside.

Greg Smore, a Peco spokesman, said the utility was not experiencing any major outages Saturday night, but that emergency response teams would be prepared should the strong winds pose problems the rest of the weekend.
