Man dies after shooting at 11th & Poplar

A 28-year-old man died Thursday after being shot several times at close range at an intersection, Philadelphia police said.

A 28-year-old man died Thursday after being shot several times at close range at an intersection, Philadelphia police said.

Rodney Richardson of West Philadelphia was found on the sidewalk at 11th and Poplar Streets at 4:29 p.m., police said, next to his car - which was still running, with the radio playing.

He had been hit seven times, in the chest, stomach and back, Chief Inspector Scott Small said, and was pronounced dead a half-hour later at Hahnemann University Hospital.

Small said at least 10 shots were fired from a semiautomatic gun. Police recovered the shell casings "within feet" of where Richardson collapsed, he said.

Police also found marks on the pavement that indicated that Richardson's assailant had been standing over him and shooting down, Small said.

"It appears he was shot at very, very close range, and it also appears he is obviously the intended target," Small said.

Richardson had a small-caliber handgun in his pocket, of a different caliber from the shell casings found at the scene, Small said. He said it did not appear Richardson had even pulled out the gun.

Homicide detectives are pulling footage from municipal security cameras at 11th and Poplar and hoping to obtain more video from local businesses. Detectives were also canvassing the area for witnesses Thursday night.

In 911 calls, the shooter was described as a man entering a white vehicle, possibly a Jaguar, Small said. The car was last seen going north on 11th.

No motive had been determined in the case, and no arrests had been made Friday.
