Man arrested in shooting in Bustleton

Police arrested a 26-year-old man Thursday night, minutes after they say he fired off two rounds from an assault rifle, critically injuring a neighbor and rattling a quiet section of Bustleton.

Chief Inspector Scott Small said police responded to multiple calls of a shooting on the 8900 block of Alton Street about 7:30 p.m.

They found a 57-year-old man with gunshot wounds to the arm and stomach, and took him to Einstein Medical Center, where he was in critical condition late Thursday.

As he was being taken to the hospital, the man pointed to the rear driveway, where he said the gunman was lurking. The men know each other, Small said.

Police from the Seventh District proceeded to the back of the driveway, where they found a man holding an assault rifle and took him into custody without incident.

The scene was littered with at least 28 shell casings, Small said, and the two homes on either side of the driveway were struck. One home was riddled with 20 bullets, but although it was occupied at the time, no other injuries were reported.

An empty clip was found at the scene, indicating the shooter reloaded.

Small said that both men lived on the block and that detectives were investigating a motive.

The Philadelphia Daily News, citing a police source, reported that the suspected gunman is engaged to the victim's daughter.

Police were interviewing witnesses Thursday and will review footage from security cameras that might have captured the incident, Small said.

"We never get any violent crime in that neighborhood," Small said. "It's very rare for someone to get shot, and the fact there were 28 shots fired by an assault rifle, it's very, very unusual."
