A 10-year-old boy riding a bicycle was critically injured Thursday night when he was struck and dragged by an SUV in the Castor Gardens section of Northeast Philadelphia, police said.

About 8:20 p.m., the 2002 Cadillac Escalade was headed south on Loretto Avenue and had stopped at a stop sign at Longshore Avenue, said Chief Inspector Scott Small. The boy was riding west on Longshore and was struck by the accelerating SUV. The boy was dragged about 20 feet.

He was transported to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children. The driver, a 57-year-old woman, stayed at the scene and did not appear to be under the influence, Small said. He said he did not know if the boy was wearing a helmet. - Robert Moran
