Montco coroner: Policeman apparently shot himself in Lower Providence

A Lower Providence Township police officer died Wednesday afternoon in a parking lot at the Police Department form what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the Montgomery County coroner said.

A Lower Providence Township police officer died Wednesday afternoon in a parking lot at the Police Department form what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the Montgomery County coroner said.

The Montgomery County public safety communications center, which serves as a dispatch hub for police departments, received a call of a shooting at 2:33 p.m., a center spokesman said.

The male officer apparently suffered a single gunshot wound, said county coroner Walter I. Hofman. Hofman had no further information on the victim, the wound or the weapon used in the shooting.

An autopsy will be done Thursday morning, Hofman said.
