Police are investigating a suspicious fire at the YMCA facility under construction in Haverford Township.

Smoke was discovered coming from a pile of debris around 4 a.m. in the concrete pool area that is still under construction, police said.

The smoldering refuse could have been the result of vandalism or a improperly discarded cigarette, police said. There was no damage. The site is locked but there are small holes in the fence, Chief Carmine Pettine said.

There have been two other recent cases of vandalism at the property, located on the site of a defunct bubblegum factory on Eagle Road.

On May 17, the front window was shot out by unknown vandals using a BB gun. Damage was estimated at $4,000, according to police records. The investigation is ongoing.

On June 2, Sean Martin, 21, of Drexel Hill, was arrested after he allegedly "tagged" part of the floor with a can of spray paint he found on the premises. Martin, told police he had gone onto the site through an open gate intending to smoke marijuana. He was charged with burglary, criminal trespass, possession and related crimes.

The recreation facility is expected to open in October.
