One more chance to replace lost shade

Lost some shade to Hurricane Sandy? Looking for more greenery in your backyard?

Philadelphia property owners get another chance Sunday to pick up a free yard tree, or two of them, in TreePhilly's final giveaway of the year, at the Pennypack Environmental Center, 8600 Verree Rd. in the Northeast.

Some trees are reserved for people who called in advance, but others are available to walk-ins. The selection is likely to include magnolias, sugar maples, Eastern redbuds, black gums, white fringetrees and sour cherries, among others.

TreePhilly is a joint project of the Philadelphia Parks & Recreation Department, partnered with the Fairmount Park Conservancy and supported by Wells Fargo Bank, working toward Mayor Nutter's goal of planting 300,000 new city trees by the end of his second term in early 2016.

The total so far is about 65,000, according to Parks & Recreation's chief of staff, Patrick Morgan. He recommends that walk-ins visit the Environmental Center between noon and 1 p.m., or 3 to 4 p.m.

Former Philadelphia Traffic Court Judge Willie Singletary has already given up his robes and his $85,000 salary, after an incident last February when he displayed cellphone photos of his erect penis to a 22-year-old Traffic Court cashier.

But the case isn't over. The state's Court of Judicial Discipline announced Thursday that it had dismissed Singletary's objections to its conclusion that he had engaged in judicial misconduct. The court set a Dec. 13 hearing in Harrisburg - open to the general public - "to determine the appropriate disciplinary sanction."
