Jersey beaches reopen after debris cleanup
The Long Beach Island Health Department has reopened 13 miles of beach from Barnegat Light to Beach Haven after closing the stretch on Saturday when medical waste, trash and other debris washed ashore.Daniel Krupinski, a senior inspector at the health department, said township employees worked from Saturday through early Sunday to clean the beaches. The closed beaches affected the towns of Barnegat Light, Beach Haven, Surf City and Ship Bottom.
Authorities surmise that the debris may have come from the sewer overflow systems or from the inner shorelines of harbor areas in New York and New Jersey.
