Missing mother named as river search is halted

Authorities have suspended the search for a mother who disappeared in the Delaware River on Sunday afternoon.

Authorities have suspended the search for a mother who disappeared in the Delaware River on Sunday afternoon.

Her identity was released as well. She is Maribel Gonzalez, 44, of the Richmond Hill section of Queens in New York City.

"We suspended the search because there is no reasonable chance we can find her alive," said Coast Guard Petty Officer Christopher McLaughlin.

Units of the Coast Guard, New Jersey State Police, and local authorities searched for more than 13 hours, covering more than 44 square nautical miles near No Name Island, off the Gloucester County town of National Park, according to the Coast Guard. The area is across from the Philadelphia Navy Yard.

Gonzalez, who was not wearing a life jacket, fell into the water about 4:30 p.m. after trying to transfer from a disabled boat to an inflatable raft.

Earlier reports were incorrect about two daughters being rescued by a person with a jetski.

"The daughters never entered the water. They were aboard the 20-foot boat the entire time," McLaughlin said.

Crews aboard at least two boats searched all night, from Sunday evening until several hours after dawn. Two helicopters assisted until late last night, then resumed looking this morning.

Philadelphia Marine Police, the Philadelphia Fire Department and Gloucester County Fire and Rescue also took part in the search.
