Police are looking for the gunman who shot and killed a Southwest Philadelphia bodega owner in front of his wife during an apparent robbery last night.

The victim has been identified as Domingo Rodriguez, 53, who was described by neighbors as the new and well-liked owner of the Perlata Grocery at 66th Street and Guyer Avenue in the Elmwood neighborhood.

Rodriguez, a father of two, was standing behind a Plexiglas-enclosed counter in the store about 7 p.m. when the gunman entered, opened the door to the secure area and shot the shopkeeper in the chest, police said.

The shooter took about $2,000 from Rodriguez's pocket and fled, officials said.

Medics rushed Rodriguez to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, but doctors could not save him and pronounced him dead at 7:42 p.m., investigators said.

Rodriguez's wife, who witnessed the shooting, was not physically harmed during the robbery.
