Limited services on Memorial Day

City's main attractions to stay open for biz

The Memorial Day Weekend is a time to commemorate the servicemen and servicewomen who have lost their lives in service to the country. Philadelphia will take part in this nationwide recognition with citywide closings and special ceremonies.

Tomorrow, the National Association for Black Veterans plans to honor minority World War II veterans with an event at the Aces Museum, 5801 Germantown Ave. The program will kick off with a film and a panel discussion beginning at 9:30 a.m., with the main tribute starting at 1 p.m., and will wrap up with a dinner-dance at 7 p.m.

Several of the city's main tourist attractions, including the Franklin, the Philadelphia Zoo, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and Independence Hall will remain open with normal operating hours Monday. The Academy of Natural Sciences will operate on its 10-to-5 holiday schedule. The Please Touch Museum will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. throughout the weekend as it debuts its "Teddy Bear Faire," with musical programming and theater geared toward children 10 and younger. Visitors who bring a teddy bear will receive $1.50 off the regular price of admission.

The Daily News will not publish Monday. Nor will the Postal Service deliver mail that day, and trash won't be picked up. All trash and recyclables will be picked up Tuesday with the remaining pickups delayed by one day for the rest of the week. State stores will be closed Monday, as will most banks.

SEPTA will have normal bus and rail service tomorrow, but will use its Sunday schedule for both Sunday and Monday.

Motorists are reminded that heightened Pennsylvania State Police enforcement is in effect through midnight Monday.

Philadelphia Gas Works' customer-service centers will be closed Monday. PGW's Center City office, 1137 Chestnut St., will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. tomorrow for bill payment and service restoration.

Peco Energy's regular business office and payment center, at 23rd and Market streets, will be closed Monday, but emergency services will be fully staffed and available at 1-800-841-4141.
